Beginning February 2020, Tyson Fresh Meats – the processor’s beef and pork subsidiary – will prohibit the use of ractopamine in the market hogs it buys from farmers. Ractopamine is a feed ingredient that helps increase the amount of lean meat in hogs. While it is FDA-approved and considered safe for use, some countries such as China prohibit the import of pork from hogs that have been given the product. Tyson Fresh Meats has been offering a limited amount of ractopamine-free pork to export customers by working with farmers who raise hogs without it, and by segregating the animals and products at processing plants. However, these programs no longer adequately meet growing global demand. Most of the hogs delivered to the company’s pork plants are purchased from about 2,000 independent farmers. Farmers have until February 4, 2020 to meet the new requirement. Start-up to open world’s first cultured meat pilot production facility Israel start-up, Future Meat Technologies, will open the world’s first cultured meat pilot production facility after raising $14 million in Series A funding. Funding will be used to expand R&D efforts and build the world’s first cultured meat pilot production facility, estimated to begin operations in 2020, south of Tel Aviv. The company’s process utilises the rapid growth of connective tissue cells to reach high densities before turning the cells to cultured muscle and healthy fats. It aims to introduce hybrid products – combining plant proteins for texture and cultured fats that create the distinct aroma and flavour of meat. With current small-scale production costs of $150 per pound of chicken and $200 per pound of beef, Future Meat Technologies plans to release its hybrid products at a competitive cost level from its pilot production facility by 2021 and launch a second line of 100% cultured meat products at a cost of less than $10 per pound by 2022. © Shutterstock/Danupol Wongchai © Future Meat Technologies 04-09.qxp_Layout 1 22/10/2019 13:07 Page 5Guinness launch limited-edition coffee A limited-edition coffee has been launched by brewer Guinness and Tiki Tonga, founded by current Saracens captain and former British and Irish Lions player, Brad Barritt. 232 Brew has been developed to give rugby fans across the UK the perfect start to those early morning kick-offs.
