< Previous40 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net ENGINEERING AND COMPONENTS prevention and a long shelf life. Even the sealing and closing mechanism that may heat, pressure or induction seal a container is essential in ensuring security, product integrity and freshness. Sealing components may also incorporate coding or labelling systems, print expiration dates and batch numbers or product information. Here again is a small action which makes packaging and product both informative and traceable, and communicates your commitment to customer satisfaction and safety. Knowing how important engineering is to the upkeep and maintenance of a food production line, engineers themselves can play a critical role in the efficient running of a food business and each component it entails. They can be key strategists in preventative maintenance, minimising unexpected breakdowns and equipment failures. Through the development of proper maintenance schedules for each unique piece of equipment, based on its manufacturer’s requirements, they perform routine inspections, cleaning and corrections in function. Calibration also ensures that machinery and equipment perform within specified tolerances and accuracy requirements. Engineers regularly calibrate sensors, measuring instruments and control systems to check on their accurate measurements and consistent performance. Calibration and testing help maintain the quality and reliability of production processes, particularly in areas such as temperature, pressure, flow and weight measurements. This approach helps identify and address potential issues before they escalate, reducing downtime and improving overall equipment reliability. Condition monitoring is also necessary when dealing with old machinery, or advanced units which may have intricate systems. Sensors can be used to continuously assess the health and performance of machinery, engineers utilising techniques such as vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, and acoustic emissions to detect abnormalities and wear. By monitoring key parameters, engineers can identify early warning signs, or diagnose problems so maintenance or repairs can be scheduled accordingly. Inevitably, machinery may require repairs due to component failures, or unforeseen issues. Engineering know- how then becomes crucial for identifying the faulty components and making repairs. Engineers often collaborate with other specialists to source spare parts, access technical documentation and implement repairs in a timely manner. Their knowledge of the machinery’s design specifications enables them to efficiently resolve issues and minimise productivity disruptions. Engineers further contribute to the maintenance process by providing training to operators and maintenance personnel. Easy-to-follow procedures, work instructions and documentation they provide will guide personnel in performing routine maintenance tasks effectively and safely under their own steam. Engineers may conduct additional training sessions on machinery operation, troubleshooting techniques and safety protocols according to their services and the business’s budget. By empowering with necessary knowledge and skills, engineers foster a culture of proactive maintenance and enhance the smooth everyday running of equipment, all while keeping employees safe while operating and maintaining their assigned equipment. Here’s a sneak peek at one of our latest stories. Food giants team up to provide climate-neutral transport between Denmark and the UK Arla, Danish Crown, DFDS and DSV have teamed up in a new partnership to develop a climate-neutral transport corridor between Denmark and the UK. The ambition for the partnership is to transport Arla’s and Danish Crown’s products from farms in Denmark to consumers in the UK with zero impact on the environment. Every year, Arla and Danish Crown export vast quantities of foods through the port at Esbjerg in Denmark to Immingham on the east coast of England and on to the UK market, and transports have a significant carbon footprint. The two food giants have now teamed up with DFDS and DSV to develop a new transport corridor to achieve climate-neutral food transports from Denmark to the UK (net zero) by 2030. “The entire agricultural sector is currently undergoing a historic transition, and both Arla and Danish Crown have committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2050. We can only achieve that by joining forces, and DFDS and DVS are of a similar mind. Together, we want to explore and develop the opportunities already available to us today, rather than wait for new technologies,” explains Bo Svane, head of logistics at Arla.
