Important is the collection of equipment and production data and subsequent data analytics. Facilitating this is the integration of technologies like sensor networks to monitor processes and equipment. Particularly useful for engineers evaluating maintenance and performance, machinery sensors, and their associated data, can be used to track equipment and components, and when AI prognostic algorithms are utilised, preventative maintenance can be initiated. This reduces maintenance costs and increases uptime where a broken machine could prove costly and see significant waste, enables spare parts to be on hand and is key in engineering more productive machines. Root cause failure analysis follows preventative maintenance as the next step forward, with AI and real time © Shutterstock /mady70 SMC launches all-in-one energy saving vacuum ejector and pump system SMC has given its popular all-in-one vacuum unit ejector and pump system a refresh with the launch of the ZK2-A series. The latest incarnation offers customers superb efficiencies in terms of space, energy, maintenance and noise. The new ZK2-A has been designed with flexibility in mind and is fully interchangeable with the ZK2 series, sharing the same mounting pitch and port sizes. Plus, it maintains the original energy saving features, including a digital pressure switch that reduces air consumption by up to 90% and a two- stage ejector, which increases suction flow by up to 50% while decreasing air expenditure. The latest design has a range of new enhancements that helps improve productivity. The check valve is now integrated into the body gasket, preventing fitting errors or it dropping down when replacing the filter case. And the long lock nut comes as standard, improving control of the vacuum break flow adjusting needle. Advantageous for engineering optimal solutions in food production, this will see faults designed out and tweaks made. Firms are focusing on smart solutions to bolster production, and enhanced engineering software is being established to improve the design, construction and operation of plants with features such as virtual visualisation to boost collaboration with customers and engineers, simulate, evaluate and pinpoint suitable solutions, speed up delivery and implementation and ultimately design a total production plant. Digital twin technology - offering a virtual model of something physical, whether that be a product, motor, production line or facility - is of interest here for facilities, to simulate plans and scenarios for processes ahead of implementing, say, equipment changes and related investment, allowing one to understand the impact of a change. With a breadth of further functions, digital twins let engineers test different designs and put them in various contexts in advance to uncover inefficiencies, areas for improvement and mistakes before money, time and energy is spent on production. With engineering projects at the will of constant design and requirement changes, this is particularly useful. Simulation is also being utilised to make higher performing equipment that enhances the environmental sustainability and shrinks the impact of machinery and operations. With sustainability a major concern for food firms, it is being engineered into equipment, to support a quest for efficiency gains, from solutions that minimise waste, like machines that can wrap products more tightly, or allow less product giveaway, to those that help decrease energy consumption, including better performing components, sensors deployed to track and tackle motor energy consumption, and robots manufactured to be safe for the environment. As individual brands and companies invest in research on this, a number of consortiums are also working to upgrade technology. For instance, the National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering, engineering innovators at rice mill designer Koolmill, and other industrial and academic partners in the UK and India are working to optimise the rice milling process, reduce breakage and waste, develop a lower energy milling process and increase total rice output. Technology always ages, and with the speed at which the food industry is changing alongside demand, preferences and regulation, manufacturers must ensure to keep on top of the latest machinery and component advances and address legacy equipment that will impact their ability to compete against competitors, many of which are investing in innovation to step ahead. New packaged high-quality water system is ‘Good to Go Axium Process’ new ‘Good to Go’ packaged water treatment system is designed for water purifying applications and delivers commercially sterile, sustainable, high- quality water, bypassing the need for ion exchange beds and chemical treatment processes. The system, which utilises reverse osmosis technology, is being used for applications where low conductivity (salt removed) water is required and can be used in conjunction with complementary processes such as carbon filtration and ultraviolet (UV) treatment, providing a robust and versatile solution to tackle almost every water purification application. Delivered as a packaged solution, requiring only minimal operator intervention and very low maintenance, Axium’s “Good to Go” system is supplied with high rejection low energy membranes, stainless steel housings and pipework throughout, cartridge filter, multiple sample points, conductivity monitor, feed pressure switches, variable area flow meters and an inverter-controlled pump as standard.
