Intermarché the first to launch SIG’s paper straw solution in Europe SIG’s fully recyclable and renewable paper straw solution for aseptic carton packs is being launched for the first time in Europe by Intermarché, one of the most popular retail chains in France. Intermarché is the first company in France to launch paper straws with aseptic carton packs. By offering this solution across its three brands – Paquito, Look and top Budget – it will save 10 tonnes of virgin plastic per year. The company will be offering the juices and beverages of these brands in combiblocMini packs with SIG’s 6mm straight paper straw solution – one of several options available in SIG’s paper straw portfolio. The cartons are filled at Antartic, a production unit belonging to Agromousquetaires, a food-processing subsidiary of Groupement Les Mousquetaires. Alain Plougastel from Intermarché said: “We decided early on to introduce SIG’s paper straw solution for aseptic carton packs to offer consumers a more sustainable alternative to plastic straws, while maintaining the on-the-go convenience of small- size packs.” New ethnic foods platform launches with TRS Foods and East End Foods brands TRS Foods and East End Foods are joining Vibrant Foods, a newly created ethnic foods platform. The launch of Vibrant Foods follows the acquisition of TRS and East End by Exponent in November 2019. Although Just Eat already has a base in Canada, the takeover grants it access to a widespread and proven platform across the US. The announcement follows only months after Just Eat acquired Germany and Netherlands-based Takeaway.com. “A combined Just Eat Takeaway.com and Grubhub will become the world’s largest online food delivery company outside of China, with strong brands connecting restaurant partners with their customers in 25 countries,” Just Eat said in a statement. However, the combined forces will face stiff competition in the food delivery sector with major names including Uber Eats and Deliveroo. The deal is expected to complete in early 2021. news Food & Drink International 5 www.fdiforum.net Domino’s trial new fresh vegan dough Domino’s is trialling two new vegan pizzas made using fresh hand-stretched dough in 46 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The trial follows a year of product development by the food innovation crew at the company’s test kitchen. The development built on consumer feedback from a previous trial. It sees the company take two of its popular meat- free menu options – Margherita and Vegan Vegi Supreme – and make them using an improved freshly made dough to replicate the Domino’s taste. He added: “Our dedicated pizza chefs are incredibly excited for our fans to try this new and improved latest dough as we believe we’ve nailed it,” said Aman Prasher, Domino’s Chief Vegan Dough Developer. “If they agree, and love it as much as we do, Domino’s will roll out nationwide. Danone’s acquisition of Harrogate Water cleared by regulators The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has cleared Danone’s acquisition of Harrogate Water after launching a merger inquiry in May. Back in February, it was revealed that Danone was set to acquire a majority stake in Harrogate Water, the family-owned business behind the historic Harrogate Spring Water brand. The share purchase agreement will see the French corporation take a majority stake via a UK subsidiary, Danone Water. The current shareholders in Harrogate Water – the Cain family – will remain as minority shareholders and continue to contribute to the company’s growth. Harrogate Spring Water has a history dating back to 1571 and was first bottled in 1740. The acquisition will allow Danone Waters to further develop its position in the UK and support future growth for Harrogate Water’s portfolio. It will provide new opportunities for both businesses to deliver growth across complementary channels, combining the respective know-how of Harrogate Water in foodservice and Out of Home channels and Danone Water in retail channels. This move also reflects the shared ambition of both companies to encourage healthier and more sustainable drinking choices. The hope is to encourage a long-term change to packaging design by companies who can most influence the recycled content in the packs they specify and produce. It is thought that the future tax revenue will benefit investment into recycling sustainability and waste management, much like the Producer Responsibility Packaging Waste Regulations. The tax targets companies in the UK that either; manufacturer plastic packaging, import plastic packaging, import filled plastic packaging, where the plastic packaging on a per component basis contains less than 30% recycled content. A lot of the finer details are still to be confirmed after this consultation period regarding exports and transport packaging rules. Tetra Pak commits to net zero emissions Tetra Pak has committed to reaching net zero emissions across its value chain by 2050. This aim is being supported with an intermediate 2030 target of net zero carbon emissions across its own operations. The company will also set emissions reduction targets in line with 1.5°C according to the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative across scopes 1, 2 and 3. The company’s green house gas (GHG) accounts have been audited by an independent third party since 2013. “We have consistently delivered on our climate goals, right from the first goal set in 2002, again in 2005 and we are on track to meet our 2020 goal. In 2017, we were the first company in the food and beverage industry to have our climate impact reduction targets approved by the SBT initiative,” said Lars Holmquist, Executive Vice President Packaging Solutions and Commercial Operations at Tetra Pak. “More recently, we joined the European Alliance for Green Recovery, the first pan- European call for mobilisation on post-crisis green investment solutions. Today, we’re once again leading the way by setting ambitious net zero emissions targets that will drive transformation right across our sector and the entire value chain. The planet’s greatest environmental challenge demands nothing less from us.” Tetra Pak will focus on four key areas to reach net zero GHG emissions across its own operations by 2030, and to realise its 2050 ambition along the entire value chain: * Lowering energy-related emissions through energy conservation, improvements in energy efficiency, installing on site solar photovoltaics (solar PV) and purchasing renewable energy. * Partnering with suppliers and other stakeholders along the value chain to significantly reduce carbon footprint. * Accelerating the development of its low carbon circular packaging and equipment portfolio and working to help customers achieve their emission reduction targets. * Developing sustainable recycling value chains, via collaboration with customers, waste management companies, recyclers, municipalities, industry associations and equipment suppliers. Chr. Hansen strengthens probiotic production with acquisition Chr. Hansen, the Danish producer of natural ingredients, is strengthening and expanding its global microbial platform and Human Health business with the acquisition of UAS Laboratories, a Wisconsin probiotics company. UAS Labs is being acquired from the private equity fund Lakeview Equity Partners, management team and other shareholders at a transaction value, net of tax assets, of $530 million. UAS Labs has 230 employees and is expected to generate revenues of around $85 million and EBITDA above $30 million before synergies in 2020. The acquisition grants Chr. Hansen access to six trademarked strains within a range of indications including digestive disorders, immune stimulation, infant probiotics, weight management, and other areas. Moreover, it provides two GMP facilities in Wisconsin, close to Chr. Hansen’s own facilities in Milwaukee, with fermentation capacity and downstream processing. “We are excited about the acquisition of UAS Labs and look forward to welcoming all its talented people, to join forces in our shared purpose – to develop and expand the global probiotics market, and we look forward to building upon the strengths of both companies,” said Mauricio Graber, CEO of Chr. Hansen. “The two UAS Labs production facilities in the United States will increase our flexibility and capacity to produce, and also create a better balance in our geographical footprint. Based on the energy-saving sustainable formula which underpins the success of the group’s existing sites worldwide, the Corby facility sits on a 23-acre plot in a prime location in the logistics ‘golden triangle’ with proximity to frozen distribution centres of large retail and food service customers. The Corby operation will enable NewCold to offer their services to customers for whom Wakefield may not have been geographically well-situated or who had run out of space. Ribena maker invests in search for climate-resilient blackcurrants Ribena maker, Lucozade Ribena Suntory (LRS), has invested over half a million pounds in a five-year project with the James Hutton Institute to develop new varieties of climate-resilient blackcurrant. LRS, which uses 90% of the blackcurrants grown in Britain to make Ribena, has supported the Institute since 1991, investing over £10 million to improve the sustainability and quality of British blackcurrant crops. Around 10,000 tonnes of blackcurrants are harvested from British fields each year to keep up with consumer demand for Ribena. Previous research from the Institute has highlighted the threat that climate change poses to blackcurrant farming. The plants need a period of sustained cold weather in the winter, without which they yield less fruit and have a shorter lifespan. The UK’s 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 2002 and winters in the UK are getting gradually warmer. This is one of the challenges LRS and the James Hutton Institute will continue to address over the next five years, aiming to develop varieties of blackcurrants that can cope with these changes. The LRS-backed research will also be on the lookout for berries with high anthocyanin levels, the compound that gives berries their purple colour, and for varieties that are naturally more disease and pest resistant. Harriet Prosser, who works as an agronomist at LRS, said: “Sourcing local blackcurrants from British growers keeps food miles low and allows us to trace every berry back to its field. Whenever someone buys a bottle of Ribena, they can be confident they’re helping to support biodiversity on our farms and research into the most sustainable ways of farming. “I look forward to extending the purple patch that we’ve had with the James Hutton Institute for nearly three decades and making sure the UK’s blackcurrant farmers have a bright future.” © Shutterstock/Khairun Yusuff UN warns COVID-19 could spark a global food crisis The COVID-19 pandemic could spark the worst global food crisis in fifty years, according to a new report from the UN. Antonio Guterres, Director-General of the UN, warns that this “impending” global food emergency could impact almost 50 million children and adults. “Our food systems are failing, and the COVID-19 pandemic is making things worse,” Guterres said in a statement accompanying the report. “More than 820 million people are hungry. Some 144 million children under the age of five are stunted –- more than one in five children worldwide. This year, some 49 million extra people may fall into extreme poverty due to the COVID-19 crisis. “The number of people who are acutely food or nutrition insecure will rapidly expand,” he continued. “Unless immediate action is taken, it is increasingly clear that there is an impending global food emergency that could have long term impacts on hundreds of millions of children and adults.” In offering a means of combatting the looming crisis, Mr Guterres called for improved social protections for those living in poverty, as concerns mount for basic nutritional welfare amid the pandemic. He encouraged the international community to “mobilise to save lives and livelihoods, focusing attention where the risk is most acute.” “That means designating food and nutrition services as essential, while implementing appropriate protections for food workers,” he said. “It means preserving critical humanitarian food, livelihood and nutrition assistance to vulnerable groups. “And it means positioning food in food-crisis countries to reinforce and scale up social protection systems.” © Shutterstock/Alexandros Michailidis 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 26/06/2020 12:25 Page 48 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news Nestlé sells North American refrigerated pasta, sauces & cheese business Nestlé USA is selling its refrigerated pasta, sauces and cheese-focussed North American Buitoni Business to the Buitoni Food Company, a newly-formed portfolio company under Brynwood Partners. Buitoni Food Company will be headquartered in Stamford, CT and the Danville, VA manufacturing facility, with its approximately 525 full-time employees, will continue to support the business. The deal includes a 240,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Danville, VA. The transaction includes the rights to the Buitoni brand in the US, Canada and the Caribbean territories. Buitoni Food Company will continue to manufacture Nestlé Toll House cookie dough products from the Danville, VA facility under a long-term supply agreement. “We are delighted to announce the formation of Buitoni Food Company,” said Henk Hartong III, Chairman and CEO of Brynwood Partners. “We are thrilled to add the famous Buitoni brand, and its delicious pastas, sauces and cheeses to our investment portfolio. Buitoni has a rich history and Italian heritage that has delighted consumers for over 100 years. “The Danville, VA facility will enable us to quickly invest in new culinary and eating trends so that we can build on the strong foundation of current Buitoni offerings. We look forward to innovating and growing the Buitoni brand as more consumers seek out high quality meals that can be easily prepared at home.” The transaction is expected to close within the next 30 days, subject to customary US regulatory review. Terms and conditions of the deal are not being disclosed. Founder & CEO of Iceland take full ownership of retailer Sir Malcom Walker and Tarsem Dhaliwal, the founder & Executive Chairman and CEO of Iceland respectively, have taken full ownership of the frozen food retailer. The duo has purchased the entire shareholding of the company’s sole external investor Brait SE – representing 63.1% of the issued share capital – through a newly established company which they wholly own. Iceland Foods is now 100% owned by Sir Malcolm Walker CBE, Tarsem Dhaliwal and their related parties. “It is particularly satisfying to turn this new page in Iceland’s history just before the 50th anniversary of the opening of our first shop on 18 November 1970. Having started the business in partnership with a friend, I am delighted to have come full circle and own what are now more than 1,000 stores with another good friend in 2020,” said Mr Walker. “Over the last half century we have had a series of external investors in our business but I have no hesitation in saying that Brait has been the best. They have been consistently understanding and supportive, and were friends as well as business partners.
