Import and export16 Though Irish food and drink exports have hit new record highs, the country maintains a need to diversify its end markets. Supply chain spotlight20 Innovative technologies have long been essential to the agri-food supply chain, across Great Britain and internationally. But at the heart of the current movement for precision, efficiency and transparency is a drive for sustainable processes that are healthier for all life on Earth. Caps and closures24 Having long been vital in protecting food and drink products and allowing easy dispensing, caps and closures are gaining fresh attention for their sustainability. Slicing, dicing and cutting 28 When you’re looking to install, change or upgrade equipment, the key concerns of efficiency and hygiene always remain the same. But with the swathes of technology to choose from, weighing up its suitability to your factory is also a must. This is based on metrics developed by government to enable nutritionists to ‘score’ food, looking at a whole range of factors from sugar to protein to fruit and vegetable content. This is largely due to the food and drink industry making changes to support balanced diets, including improving the recipes of our favourite brands, innovating with new healthier options and providing appropriate portion sizes. Products from FDF members now contribute 13% fewer calories, 15% fewer sugars and 24% less salt to the average shopping basket than they did eight years ago. The Food and Drink Federation’s chief scientific officer Kate Halliwell said: “Our companies are committed to helping people live healthy lives and we recognise the important role we play in offering a range of healthier choices for consumers. These latest figures show the fantastic achievements the UK food and drink industry continues to deliver, throughout a challenging period of uncertainty, and we should celebrate this. “Manufacturers have continued to innovate and bring new healthier products to market. Whether that’s adding more vegetables to a pasta sauce, reducing sugar in a breakfast cereal or enabling you to choose a smaller portion of cake, this has had a real demonstrable impact on the average shopping basket, supporting the nation to have access to a healthy balanced diet.” The latest data also found that the FDF’s largest companies have managed to achieve improvements on nutrition which are around four times that of smaller companies. Kate added: “This data demonstrates that more support is needed to help smaller businesses match the innovation and output of the larger companies.” 4 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news Loryma expands portfolio of high-protein crispies Lory® IsoCrisp with wheat variant Ingredients specialist Loryma is expanding its Lory® IsoCrisp range with a wheat- based variant. The crispy extruded product consists of wheat protein, wheat starch, rice flour and small amounts of cocoa powder. With 71g per 100g, the crispies are rich in protein while containing little sugar and saturated fatty acids. This means they not only add a pleasant crunch to high-protein, low-carb and sports nutrition products such as biscuits, bars, muesli and granola, but also promise a plant protein boost. Manufacturers can also offer the vegan crispies, which have a diameter of about two millimetres, in their original form – for example, as crunchy additions to muesli. The new Lory® IsoCrisp variety is made from European wheat, has a neutral taste and can be individually flavoured. For further information, please visit: http://www.loryma.de/en/ or LinkedIn. The award recognises how the project has delivered improved sustainability for the Heinz Snap Pots while retaining what makes them so popular with consumers: handy snappable format, microwave-ready and freshness retention. The Heinz Snap Pots produced by Berry Global use 39% ISCC PLUS-certified (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) recycled soft plastic on a mass balance basis. Soft plastic is returned by consumers and collected by Tesco stores for conversion by Plastic Energy into an optimal oil feedstock. This is combined with virgin material by Sabic to produce an alternative feedstock to manufacture recycled food-contact approved plastic pellets. These are sent to an ISCC-certified Berry Global site for manufacturing into new Heinz Beanz Snap Pots after extensive trials led by Sabic, Berry Global and KraftHeinz to select the correct polymer compositions to achieve the challenging technical requirements. After use the Heinz Snap Pots can be recycled through kerbside collection. By diverting, recovering and upcycling plastics which would otherwise have been sent to landfill or incineration, this first of its kind project helps to promote and support the move towards a circular economy. AstellBio bring Liquid Waste Autoclaves to ChemUK 2023 AstellBio – the leading manufacturer of thermal effluent decontamination systems and liquid waste autoclaves in the UK, will be exhibiting at ChemUK 2023 on 10 and 11 May. The event marks a number of firsts – being the first instance of CHEMLAB – a laboratory-focussed show within ChemUK, the first live premiering of the AstellBio Sink & Autoclave Combo – a combination unit containing a traditional autoclave and a liquid waste autoclave, and the first trade show that AstellBio has attended as a stand-alone brand. The company hopes that its new range of liquid waste autoclaves – such as the AstellBio Sink – will find an audience with ChemUK’s new CHEMLAB show by appealing to laboratory staff’s need for safer, cleaner ways of sterilising liquid waste. Meanwhile their larger effluent decontamination systems will be of interest to businesses who have traditionally used chemical methods to sterilise large volumes of wastewater. AstellBio will be exhibiting on Booth C74 at ChemUK 2023, 10 to 11 May. Pernod Ricard to acquire majority stake in Skrewball Pernod Ricard USA has signed an agreement for the acquisition of a majority stake in Skrewball, the world’s first super-premium peanut butter flavored American whiskey. Founded in 2018, by Steven and Brittany Yeng, Skrewball was the first peanut butter flavored whiskey that offers a smooth, nutty taste. The winning combination has since been established as a consumer favorite in the flavored whiskey category, with the brand surpassing the symbolic milestone of half-a-million nine-liter cases sold in 2022. The partnership adds a complementary brand to Pernod Ricard’s comprehensive portfolio of iconic spirits and wine brands and a perfect opportunity to continue building on its longstanding consumer centric and premiumization strategy. It comes on the back of the successful launch of Jameson Orange into the flavored whiskey category last year. Flavored whiskeys appeal to a wide range of consumers, going beyond traditional whiskey lovers. It remains one of the fastest growing spirits categories in the US, representing a quarter of the overall whiskey sales in the world- leading market. © stock.adobe.com/ Gresei 04-13.qxp_Layout 1 24/04/2023 11:43 Page 5Brewer and bar chain secures invoice discounting package to strengthen cashflow and fuel expansion Leeds-based brewer and bar chain North Brewing Co has received a £375,000 Confidential Invoicing Discounting package from Bibby Financial Services to help it strengthen cashflow and fuel national and international expansion. The new funding line will allow North’s co-founders to manage cashflow, so they can focus on planning ahead and growing the business. North has been growing its business and operations over the past few years. In 2020, the business signed a lease for a larger, 21,000 sq ft former Victorian Tannery in Springwell, Leeds, which they converted into a modern brewery, taproom and workspace during the pandemic – and which now serves as the business’s HQ. The mid-sized brewery has also been expanding its footprint, with beers now stocked in leading supermarkets and restaurants across the UK, and sold abroad, including in markets such as Japan, China and Australia. Tesco launches ready meal tray- to-tray initiative Tesco has begun recycling used plastic food trays back into packaging – creating a fully circular packaging solution for its range of core chilled ready meals. The change is in collaboration with packaging manufacturer Faerch and will see customer-recovered PET trays – collected via European kerbside waste – recycled and converted back into food grade plastic trays. Tesco’s ready meal trays already contain up to 75% recycled content, predominantly from cleaner and easier to recycle bottle flake plastic. Through the new Tray 2 Tray by Faerch™ programme, a minimum of 30% recycled tray content will be included in the new core chilled ready meals trays. A phased rollout of the new trays took place in April across Tesco’s core own brand chilled ready meals. The collaboration will ensure that high quality food-grade PET is kept within the supply chain, rather than being downcycled, and demonstrates that PET packaging from trays can be fully recovered and recycled at an industrial scale.
