Ingredients spotlight16 As we move further into the year, bold and distinct ingredient trends are beginning to emerge. Transport and logistics20 Sustainability is the key word of the logistics industry today – both in terms of environmental sustainability, and in terms of finding a sustainable source of freight workers and drivers End of line packaging 24 All packaging plays a critical role in the food industry, helping to prevent damage and contamination and extending the shelf life of food products, assuring their freshness and quality once they’ve reached stores. But this last concern in particular is where end of line packaging is essential, distinguished from other forms of packing and containment in its purpose of safeguarding products and preventing spoilage during shipping and storage. Beverages30 In 2023, consumers are looking for inventive flavour profiles that emphasise naturally and sustainably derived ingredients, for a guilt free taste of pleasure. The system uses four scanners grouped together to view the round pot from different angles to create a single 360º image of the pot. This allows the QR code to be identified, whichever way round the product is presented. A fifth scanner mounted above, scans the lid and the two images are compared by the software to ensure a match. If a mismatch is detected the line can either be stopped for manual removal of defective products or the line can be linked to a reject system to automatically remove defective products. The system can scan and verify over 200 products per minute and in trials of 1000 pots the system successfully scanned and identified all the pots. It is envisaged that this system could be integrated into a packing line to ensure only correctly coded products are packed. While the system was trialled with QR codes the technology could be adapted to scan and verify barcodes or batch and date codes. A combination of ground sampling and remote sensing data will be used to support farmers in their transition toward sustainable agriculture. The methodology developed within this partnership will track farmer efforts to improve conservation management and guide them to improve their sustainability levels. “According to the World Economic Forum, sustainable agriculture practices must triple in order to prevent climate change. Currently, adoption is hindered by a lack of consistent and acceptable measurements at scale. Our collaboration will promote resilient agriculture beginning with smallholder farms in India and commercial farms in Brazil, and lead to further expansion worldwide,” says Ron Baruchi, CEO of Agmatix. “NASA Harvest is excited to partner with Agmatix to advance the use of satellite-based information to help inform on-farm decisions which can ultimately result in increased resilience while reducing waste,” says Inbal Becker-Reshef, NASA Harvest Director. NASA Harvest will provide its expertise on agricultural remote sensing and leverage tools developed by the consortium, which will then be combined with field data from Agmatix and processed using a proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. These data-driven insights can help farmers make field-level decisions that impact sustainability most effectively, such as cover crop selection and fertilizer application. “Our collaboration will help food manufacturers meet consumer expectations for more sustainably sourced products,” says Ron Baruchi, CEO of Agmatix. Cocoa-free chocolate firm raises $5.6m WNWN Food Labs, which is bringing cocoa-free chocolate to market, has raised $5.6m (£4.5m) in financing to scale up its manufacturing and bring branded products to retail this year. PeakBridge, a core member of EIT Food, invests globally in early-stage and Series A companies, having a long-term positive impact on food systems. FoodLabs (formerly Atlantic Food Labs) extended its commitment with follow-on investment. The round also included participation from Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen Group via its subsidiary Martin Braun- Gruppe, Mustard Seed Maze, PINC, Investbridge AgriTech, and HackCapital. WNWN will use the investment to scale up manufacturing and add headcount as it prepares for a UK retail launch later in 2023. In places where collection infrastructures are still being built, we’re teaming up with stakeholders to improve collection, sorting and recycling – and we design our carton packages to increase the fibre content and use of recycled materials. The beer giant is taking strides with three pioneer brands in the UK, Finland and France, on its journey towards 100% regenerative agricultural practices by 2040. The brand commitments form part of the Group’s new ZERO Farming Footprint ambition within its recently launched ESG programme, Together Towards Zero and Beyond. Within this, the Danish brewer has committed to sourcing 30% of all agricultural raw materials from regenerative practices and sustainable sources globally by 2030, reaching 100% by 2040. Through some of its most demanding targets yet, Carlsberg Group hopes that working toward and delivering on this new ambition will help accelerate the beer industry’s transition to a regenerative model. And while rethinking the ‘farm to bottle’ process is a challenging journey, requiring multiple stakeholder alignments and value chain reconfigurations. Completion of the high- temperature pyrolysis plant in the English county of Nottinghamshire is planned for Quarter 4 2023. The pilot plant is part of the “reverse coal process” developed by The Lapwing Estate. The aim of this process is to convert CO2 emissions back into solid carbon while producing food with measurable positive environmental and social impact. To do this, peatlands are first rewetted and planted with willow coppice, allowing the peat to slowly rebuild, abating CO2 emissions from the land, and capturing atmospheric CO2 through photosynthesis. Biomass is then rotationally harvested, chipped, and fed in the form of woodchips into the high temperature pyrolysis plant, which breaks down the biomass through thermal decomposition. This produces renewable heat, electricity and biochar. Food & Drink International 9 www.fdiforum.net news UK food and drink exports hit record highs in 2022 The UK’s largest manufacturing sector has posted record figures for exports in 2022, according to the Food and Drink Federation’s (FDF) full-year trade snapshot. The FDF has compiled the latest trade figures released by His Majesty’s Customs and Excise, which show there’s been a resurgence in export sales in food and drink, with most categories now exceeding pre-pandemic levels to reach a record £24.8bn. Exports to Europe rose 22% to £13.7bn and developing markets did well too, with fast-growing economies like Vietnam nearly doubling. For the very first time, exports to non-EU markets have broken through the £10bn barrier, hitting £11.1bn. While supply chain disruption and high energy bills have played a part in the rise in value of UK exports, there has also been strong volume growth in most product categories over the last 12 months. This shows that the global appetite for high quality UK food and drink products continues to grow around the world. © stock.adobe.com/ Виталий Сова 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 27/03/2023 09:40 Page 6Next >
