The tangible plastic-free supermarket aisle will be stocked full of cutting-edge packaging made from biomaterials which can be put in the same bin as food waste, unlike traditional plastic. Enercon Industries Richard Bull, Managing Director at Enercon Industries, explains how it’s not just the milk that’s been skimmed. Consumers increasingly see plastic packaging as bad news, including the millions of plastic bottles used daily for food and beverages. The need to reduce plastic use and recycle more is well understood, but we also want to retain the benefits of safe, reliable and economical transportation and storage that plastic containers offer. Over 26 years ago, Enercon started working with the UK milk industry, demonstrating how induction cap sealing could stop leakers. The concept is simple. A foil liner is placed inside the plastic cap of a container and, as it passes through an induction field, it forms a hermetic seal to the container in a fraction of a second. This seal is so strong that the bottle or jar can be light-weighted, and the size of the cap reduced without increasing the risk of leaks. It doesn’t require an anti-tamper band or bore seal, saving even more plastic, and eliminating the issue of mixed plastic content, making recycling easier. As a result, milk bottles are now dramatically lighter, the sector saves over 10,000 tonnes of plastic every year. Induction cap sealing also increases shelf-life and maintains colour, flavour and aroma. This means that when a consumer peels back the foil, they experience the quality they expect from a brand. As we grapple with the issue and cost of environmental waste, other food and beverage sectors can follow suit and reduce plastic usage - lowering unit cost, boosting the bottom line. Bring your samples for us to seal live on the Enercon stand.
