Believed to be the world’s first such standard on a national scale, which allows it to track and verify the percentage of grass consumed in the diet of Irish dairy herds. The Bord Bia Grass Fed Standard is a processor scheme which sets out the Grass Fed rules that must be adhered to for milk from individual farms, and for milk pooled for primary processing, to be classified as Grass Fed. The model has been developed by Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority – at its Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, the leading research centre on milk production in Ireland – and will use data collected during the government-approved Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme (SDAS) on-farm audits to determine it meets the Grass Fed rules. 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2020 16:12 Page 26 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news Veolia Water Technologies UK fits the bit for beverage manufacturer Veolia Water Technologies UK (VWT UK) recently worked with an international beverage manufacturer to supply and install a new system for process water and wastewater treatment. When constructing its new production site, the manufacturer approached VWT UK for a system that could treat incoming mains water to a level suitable for its process needs. Additionally, it was important that the system met local discharge standards without the need for month-to-month alterations. Moreover, the updated solution needed to be fitted within an existing space. VWT UK recommended the BERKEFELD PurBev® Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant in combination with a FiltrafloTM filter for the treatment of process water. The PurBev® removes any organic contaminants, whilst the FiltrafloTM uses activated carbon to remove any chlorine. Ivan Henin, Project Manager at VMT UK, said: “On this project, we found a way to use innovative solutions to reduce the installation timeline, whilst maintaining a high level of quality, which helped meet the client’s process plant commissioning dates.” Hygienic sealing portfolio for the process industry Freudenberg Sealing Technologies is expanding its sealing portfolio for hygienic systems in the process industry to include two new products: Hygienic Forseal and Hygienic Pressure Seal. Both are specially developed for food applications that experience high pressures and temperatures. The unique combination of high-performance elastomers (EPDM or Fluoroprene® XP) and premium PTFE materials (Quantum®) also makes the seals resistant to a wide range of aggressive media. The Hygienic Pressure Seal can be used as a rod seal in valves or pumps, for example. The Hygienic Pressure Seal and Hygienic Forseal from Freudenberg Sealing Technologies enable customers to achieve the highest standards of purity. Flat contact surfaces with the process medium successfully prevent dead spaces. The high-performance materials are also resistant to aggressive cleaning agents and thus enable a cleaning process in the CIP/SIP procedure. With the help of customer-specific adaptation options, both products can be optimally tailored to the respective application. Another major milestone on SIG’s Way Beyond Good journey SIG has become the first in the industry to announce that, from January 2021, 100% of the paper board used in its packs will be procured as FSC certified and matching Forest Stewardship CouncilTM (FSCTM) standards for responsible sourcing. “This announcement marks another major milestone in our journey Way Beyond Good,” said Samuel Sigrist, CEO of SIG. “Over the last decade, SIG has consistently led the industry on FSC certification. We now aim to go even further in supporting sustainable forests as we partner to create a net-positive food supply system.” By sourcing 100% of its paper board as FSC-certified, SIG is supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the forthcoming EU Forestry Strategy. These achievements and the latest announcement on FSC put SIG in a strong position to support customers in meeting the growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging. Traditionally biodegradable / compostable products are very expensive. In some cases, the cost has been two or three times more than virgin products which often makes the packaging cost prohibitive and is therefore not widely used. There has also been concerns expressed about the viability of biodegradable products questioning what remains after the degradable process has been completed. Biojet® answers both of these challenges. It is a much lower cost solution and has many exciting environmental credentials. Traditionally plastic products use crude oil to create polymer which is then converted into plastic which we use to make PET boxes, tubes and clampacks. Bell Packaging’s challenge has been to make these designs biodegradable but not affect the performance of the packaging whilst it is in use. To make Biojet®, it introduces an additive which attracts microbes that uses plastic as their source of food and energy. These microbes can be found in landfill, the ocean floor, rivers and swamps where the process will only happen in the correct environment where microbes exist. What used to take thousands of years to break down plastic now takes much less time as the microbes consume the entire product. After the process has been completed, the microbes leave behind the same bi-products as decaying organic matter – humus (soil), CO2 and CH4 both of which can be captured to produce clean energy. Biojet® packaging is 100% recyclable through the normal PET recycling centres. This additive has been independently tested and complies with the Intertek Greenleaf Biodegradability Standard. Verner Wheelock passes ISO 9001 renewal with flying colours Verner Wheelock has passed its 3-year ISO 9001: 2015 re- certification audit - without incurring any non- conformances. ISO 9001:2015 is a quality standard. The food industry training company ensured that its Quality Management System (QMS) was kept updated to reflect changes in working processes since the outbreak of COVID-19, including remote delivery of courses and flexibility in staff working. Verner Wheelock’s QMS was first developed by Mitch Morrison and MD Alison Wheelock in 2017. It has helped focus on customer feedback and trainer performance and analyse the data in more detail. “To have achieved an audit with no non-conformances is really excellent news following a tough year.” said Morrison. “It shows we have suitable systems in place and our staff are totally committed to delivering training with consistently high levels of customer service, whatever the circumstances.” For information on all Verner Wheelock courses, including auditing training, please visit www.vwa.co.uk. Steve Slater and David Mallinson Plans for ‘better, fairer’ farming system published The government has set out plans to deliver a “better, fairer farming system” in England. The new plans will “transform the way we support farmers, in the most significant change to farming and land management in 50 years”. The roadmap outlines changes that will come into force over a period of seven years to help farmers adapt and plan for the future. Outside the EU and no longer bound by the EU’s bureaucratic Common Agricultural Policy, the plans set out how government plans to introduce a new system that is tailored in the interests of English farmers, centred on support that rewards farmers and land managers for sustainable farming practices. The changes will be designed to ensure that by 2028, farmers in England can sustainably produce healthy food profitably without subsidy, whilst taking steps to improve the environment, improve animal health and welfare and reduce carbon emissions. Yorkshire distillery aiming to raise £500k to fund new site A Yorkshire-based distillery is launching a community project with the aim of raising £500,000 towards the cost of its new eco-build distillery. Whitby Distillery says that its new community project, the Founders Club, is an “essential part” of its new project. Through this project, the Whitby Gin producer is aiming to raise £500,000 towards its new £1.5 million distillery. “Our aim is to raise £500,000, which would enable us to complete the distillery and the visitor centre in good time next year,” said Luke Pentith, co-founder of Whitby Distiller. “We have already floated the idea of a Founders Club to our friends and supporters and it has been received really well. Now it’s time to launch it to a wider audience in the UK. “Club members will become part of Whitby’s story, helping to bring new business to the area and creating jobs for local people and putting spirit back.” Work is slated to begin on the new site in January. © Shutterstock/Valentin Valkov 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2020 16:12 Page 6Next >
