Star Refrigeration launch low charge ammonia chiller Azanechiller 3.0

Star Refrigeration have launched the latest generation of their award-winning Azanechiller, as it continues to set the industry benchmark for efficiency, safety, durability, and sustainability. The newly introduced Azanechiller 3.0 is a state-of-the-art, industrial air-cooled ammonia chiller designed to deliver superior performance and minimise environmental impact.

Designed, built, and tested in the UK, Azanechiller 3.0 exceeds the EcoDesign Regulation’s energy efficiency requirement by up to 110%. Consuming up to 52% less electricity than a standard-rated EcoDesign chiller to deliver the same cooling performance, the chiller also outperforms UK competitors’ chillers in Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio (SEPR) by up to 20%, reinforcing its position as one of the most energy-efficient solutions for industrial refrigeration applications.

The plug-and-play Azanechiller 3.0 range delivers cooling across a wide temperature range of -20°C to +25°C, with capacities from 140kW to 1,600kW. Engineered with robust industrial components for increased reliability and longevity, the chiller is suitable for a diverse range of industries, including food production, pharmaceuticals, data centres, brewing, distilling, dairies, temperature-controlled storage, and ice rinks. The new model combines improved efficiency, advanced safety features, and an extended lifespan of over 25 years, enabling businesses to future-proof operations, cut energy costs, and reduce carbon emissions.

Azanechiller 3.0 is an environmentally responsible and future-proof choice for companies looking to align with Net Zero goals and ISO 14001 standards. The chiller is fully exempt from F-gas and PFAS regulations and has an ultra-low ammonia charge of just 0.18kg/kW. It is engineered to optimise efficiency across ambient temperatures of up to 40°C in order to withstand increasingly frequent extreme heatwaves driven by climate change.

Star Refrigeration’s Azanechiller Product Specialist, Brooke McKenna, said: “With over 120 chillers installed across the UK, Europe, and North America, Azanechiller is the most successful and efficient air cooled, low-charge ammonia refrigeration system on the market today for industrial applications.

“At Star, we pride ourselves on the expertise of our design team who select the latest and most advanced components from the world’s top manufacturers to ensure each Azanechiller system is custom built for maximum energy efficiency and performance. Our independence allows us the flexibility to create highly engineered solutions by selecting and combining the best components in the market – without being limited to using components from a parent company.

“As a result, the Azanechiller 3.0 has been engineered for sustainability to deliver low life-cycle costs for our customers.”

Engineered to maximise performance and minimise energy consumption, Azanechiller 3.0 incorporates IE4 motors, variable-speed reciprocating compressors, high-efficiency EC condenser fans and close-approach heat exchangers, making it one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient cooling solutions on the market.

The standard chiller package offers an industrial solution featuring a galvanised steel base frame, stainless steel for the uninsulated pipework, stainless steel electrical control panel, condenser cleaning hatches and high-performance PIR rigid section insulation to improve longevity and durability.

Safety improvements are also a key focus, with several new design features ensuring a safer working environment. Updates include a portable safety shower, enclosed electrical containment within the base frame, and a rain hood for the control panel – for a safer working environment while maintaining the highest industry standards. A new optional condenser ladder and handrail, as part of Star’s ‘Safe Access Solution’, and hangable fan plates provide safe and easy access for servicing, helping to reduce downtime and lower aftercare costs.

The Azanechiller 3.0 control system also comes ready to connect to Star’s Ethos system, enabling customers to activate Star’s AI-led, data driven performance monitoring and optimisation system to ensure optimum efficiency throughout the plant’s life. By leveraging advanced data analytics, Ethos provides businesses with real-time insights into energy efficiency, system health, and energy usage trends, helping operators to continuously optimise their refrigeration system to cut energy costs year on year.

The new generation Azanechiller 3.0 takes performance to the next level and offers technologically advanced features to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and secure long-term sustainability.
