Recyclable packaging innovation set to transform seafood supply chain

DS Smith has launched a groundbreaking packaging solution designed to address key sustainability and cost challenges in the seafood industry. The company’s new product, DryPack, is a 100% recyclable, water-resistant fibre-based box explicitly designed for seafood products.

Traditional packaging materials like foam or wax-coated containers have long been a problem for seafood companies, as they are non-recyclable and often end up in landfills. DryPack replaces these with a sustainable option that maintains product integrity during transport, using GreenCoat technology to ensure moisture resistance without compromising recyclability.

For seafood processors, DryPack offers several advantages. The boxes are shipped flat and assembled at processing facilities, reducing the space required for transport. This not only reduces fuel consumption but also lowers freight costs. By moving away from petroleum-based packaging, DryPack helps reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and their associated environmental impacts, including air pollution and extreme weather events.

The move towards recyclable materials also reduces the presence of microplastics in the environment, which is a growing concern for the industry. With the packaging meeting stringent food safety regulations, including those set by the Department of Agriculture and the FDA, seafood companies can confidently adopt this new solution without compromising compliance.

DryPack promises to help seafood businesses reduce costs while advancing sustainability, offering a competitive edge as the industry continues to evolve towards more environmentally responsible practices.
