Carbon Robotics unveils autonomous retrofit kit for tractors

Carbon Robotics has introduced the Carbon AutoTractor, a new autonomy kit that allows existing tractor platforms to operate autonomously. The system, designed to be retrofitted onto tractors, can be used for a variety of farm tasks, including weeding, plowing, and mowing, without the need for an in-cab driver.

The Carbon AutoTractor kit, which can be installed within 24 hours, is compatible with John Deere 6R and 8R Series tractors. It features a suite of safety measures, such as RTK GPS, 360-degree cameras, and radar-based sensors, all connected via a satellite link for real-time monitoring and control. Operators can supervise the system remotely to handle interventions when necessary.

This new product builds on Carbon Robotics’ previous experience with its LaserWeeder, a device that uses high-powered lasers to weed fields autonomously. The company pivoted from a fully autonomous weeder platform to a clever implement, integrating the laser technology into a system that can be pulled behind existing manual tractors. This change aimed to improve return on investment by allowing the device to cover more rows, thus reducing operational costs and increasing efficiency.

The Carbon AutoTractor can be deployed for a range of tasks across farm operations, increasing productivity while reducing labour dependency. It offers a cost-effective, scalable solution with flexible, pay-per-hour pricing to help farmers access this technology.

The Carbon AutoTractor is available to select LaserWeeder customers in key U.S. regions.
