Visy has developed a fibre-based thermal insulation liner, Visycell, aimed at replacing traditional expanded polystyrene (EPS) in supply chains with a kerbside recyclable alternative. The liner, which is made from cardboard waste offcuts, maintains the thermal and cushioning properties of EPS, making it suitable for temperature-sensitive food and beverages, particularly in Australia’s hot climate.
Visycell is certified by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) as recyclable through kerbside bins, and is marked with the Australasian Recycling Logo (ARL). This is in response to the fact that less than 20% of EPS is recycled in Australia, according to APCO. The product is also designed to be flat-packed, helping businesses reduce transportation costs.
The liner is being trialled by food delivery businesses, aiming to phase out EPS and reduce environmental waste. Visycell has undergone rigorous testing to meet high standards and could potentially be used in other industries, such as fragile goods transportation and construction, offering a sustainable alternative to polystyrene.
The development follows similar moves from companies like DS Smith, which launched TailorTemp, a recyclable, fibre-based, temperature-controlled packaging solution. Additionally, 2nd Level Global Solutions has introduced Solaris, a paper-based thermal pallet cover, and DGeo, in partnership with Lifoam Industries, offers a biobased additive that helps break down EPS packaging.
