Phthalates in plastic packaging face growing scrutiny

Rising concerns over the health risks of phthalates in plastic packaging are driving regulatory challenges and shifting consumer preferences. Environmental groups, including Earthjustice and the Environmental Defense Fund, have taken legal action against the FDA over alleged inaction on regulating these chemicals.

A growing body of research suggests phthalates can leach into food and beverages, prompting increased consumer demand for safer packaging alternatives. According to GlobalData, 47% of global consumers are highly concerned about health and fitness, with over half expressing worry about processed foods.

In response, packaged goods companies are exploring alternatives such as biodegradable paper, mycelium-based materials, and seaweed packaging. Industry experts suggest that failure to adapt to evolving regulations and consumer expectations could put businesses at a long-term competitive disadvantage.
