Pilot plant separation studies help to determine process feasibility, plant design and economics at an early stage and can give an accurate model of what a full-scale commercial plant could achieve. Axium’s new mobile pilot plant has been designed to be ‘plug and play’ and can easily integrate into an existing production plant minimising the set-up time for companies wishing to conduct trials at their own site. The plant, which can be equipped with multiple interchangeable full-scale membrane modules including tubular, spiral, ceramic or hollow-fibre options, uses sophisticated data collection software and digital IO-Link instrumentation enabling an accurate and detailed representation of the physical separation/concentration level achievable from the feed taken from a representative process stream. news4 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netDrainage survey supports major meat plant upgrade Drainage specialist Lanes Group has spent three months cleaning and surveying the drainage systems to support a major renovation programme at the Tulip abattoir and meat factory at Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester. A jet vac tanker and a CCTV drainage survey team from the Lanes Manchester depot were deployed at the 2.6-hectare site over 12 weekends over a four-month period. The work was part of Tulip’s £8 million upgrade programme carried out at the plant to improve productivity and enhance its position as the largest producer of higher welfare pork products in the UK. The full site drainage survey was essential to support a change of layout to the butchering and packaging areas and install a new ventilation system and enhanced hygiene segregation. Tulip Ashton Site Director Catherine Gormley said: “The rejuvenation of our facilities and infrastructure will help us to meet the needs of customers going forward and ensure our processes are as efficient as possible.”SIG creates new monitoring & control solution to optimise filling operations With food and beverage manufacturers facing a new level of production challenges, SIG has developed Plant 360 Controller – a new digital monitoring and control solution to optimise every angle of filling plant operations. SIG Plant 360 Controller is a modular solution that can be scaled to suit a manufacturer’s exact needs. It features open software that’s compatible with equipment and machinery from any supplier, meaning manufacturers have complete freedom of choice over their technology partners. With SIG Plant 360 Controller, manufacturers can gradually integrate all horizontal plant processes and systems into one platform, while also adding more functionalities to grow vertically. This ensures they can gain a full overview of their entire production – from raw material reception to warehouse, and from shop floor to top floor. SIG Plant 360 Controller consists of three core modules: Connector, Performer and Governor. These ensure manufacturers have a scalable integrated information and control solution that can be customised to their specific operations. Key Technology introduces enhanced FMAlert for VERYX digital sorters Key Technology introduces its enhanced FMAlert software for VERYX digital sorters. FMAlert captures and saves digital images of foreign material (FM) contaminants and can be programmed to immediately alert operators and signal a downstream device during critical FM events. This next-generation FMAlert annotates each image to pinpoint the FM object detected and further eases access to records. Coupled with VERYX’s advanced detection capabilities, FMAlert helps processors control FM, speed response to FM events, recognise trends and improve documentation to protect food safety. Key’s FMAlert captures and saves time-stamped digital images of critical FM present in the product stream and can be programmed to identify specific, user-defined FM types. The software can also be programmed to trigger a smart alarm to alert the operator or team when critical FM is found. The images are saved on the VERYX PC and can be downloaded at the sorter via a USB drive or accessed remotely. This was double 2015’s figure of 8% and knocked Germany from the top stop. A mature and saturated market, Germany has seen wilting numbers of vegan food NPD, the total percentage share of food launches which were classified as vegan fell from 15% in 2017 to 13% in 2018. Edward Bergen, Global Food and Drinks Analyst at Mintel, said: “Germany has certainly plateaued, likely driven by a flooded market with little room to grow further. The UK, by contrast, has seen a huge promotion of vegan restaurants and new ranges. The most poignant of these is the expansion of supermarket own-label ranges in mainstream stores, with dedicated vegan ranges.”Fast food giants found wanting on chicken welfare The biggest players in the fast food industry have been called out by World Animal Protection for failing on the welfare of chickens. The non-profit assessed nine of the world’s biggest fast food chains – from Burger King to Domino’s – on their global chicken welfare policies and actions. All the companies assessed in ‘The Pecking Order’ were all found to be performing poorly with Domino’s outright failing. Burger King, Starbucks and Subway were found to be the best of the fast food giants. However, they were still all listed as performing poorly overall. McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Nando’s and KFC were in the next tier down, found to be performing very poorly, with Domino’s below and “failing”. The World Animal Protection said it selected these companies to assess because “they’re the big players in the industry and have the power, and the responsibility, to improve the lives of millions of chickens every year”.news100% recycled plastic scoops now available at Measom Freer Measom Freer can produce their ever popular measuring scoops and hand scoops in fully recycled plastic (PCR). The partnership’s first project focuses on land stewardship and aims to pilot and scale agriculture practices on 500,000 acres of corn that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve water quality and maximize farmer profitability. Tyson said this inaugural effort will also help it meet its Land Stewardship Goal of working with farmers to improve environmental practices across two million acres of corn production by 2020. The pilot will use cloud-based agricultural technologies from MyFarms and Farmers Business Network (FBN) which both collect information on agricultural production practices while protecting data privacy. MyFarms and FBN will work to enrol farmers in the initial sustainable agriculture project. Insights from the analysis of that data will inform sustainability practices at the field level.
